Well, I decided to interview with another local company to test the waters and because frankly... my current job is frustrating.

Well, interview was this morning and I had the offer by 11AM. They’re offering better hours (read; less unpaid overtime) and promising a more manageable workload. And a raise... which I honestly wasn’t expecting. Plus the projects I’d be working on are a probably more interesting than endless apartment complexes and condos.

On the other hand, my current company has some guaranteed work coming down the pipe for the next 5 years, which in construction is kind of a big deal. Plus the people here are actually pretty great... When you ignore that management doesn’t give a shit about the hours we’re having to work to make ridiculous deadlines.

So now I have to decide if I should do the “prudent” thing and stay where I am and tough it out and be glad I’m in a company with guaranteed work, or make the jump to some place where I’ll actually have free time again and will be able to better handle the workload. Decisions are hard.

Here’s a picture from when I was at the Pirelli Challenge at Road America.

Hey man, just did the same thing so here’s my two cents.

Place I was at had really great people, steady work, clear path but I still wasn’t happy for some reason (I know why but don’t want to complain). I alternated between leaving and not for months.

Then I got an offer for an interview I felt I was underprepared for. After a week of considering and having panic attacks (something that has never happened to me before), I accepted. So far, just 7 days in, I feel very comfortable with my decision. I feel like there’s a good plan for me and I’m not checking my phone for work emails (I do get some) at all hours.

I feel relieved.

Good luck to you.

I’ve been there. About 6 months ago I left a larger more corporate job that had guaranteed work for a more start up type of job that worked on a local level with about 1/8 the staff, more pay and better working conditions. Best decision I ever made. I’m sleeping better and my mind and body are getting to back to normal.

The people at the new job could be great as well. If you’re really torn, flip a coin on it.

Don’t actually do what the coin tells you. The feeling you get when you look at heads/tails will tell you what you really want. It’s a trick I’ve used to make big decisions.

I think part of the decision is that while I was on vacation my dad gave me the “I know you’re not okay right now, so please do something about it.” talk. I’m not saying this will solve the problem, but it just might help.

I like this trick.

My wife and I had a very similar conversation. I had to take a step back and look at what I had become and how I was letting those conditions turn me into a salty asshole. Sometimes your friends and family know you better than you know yourself and you aren't aware of adverse effects.
